Jake -

there are some serious flaws with the model i've proposed, and while i've gotten some feedback on the post in backchannels, this corner of cyberspace is still dark enough that it hasn't gotten a good hashing. it looks like i'll have to shred my own model sometime in the future.

but, you asked about marketing. it's certainly not my field, but i think something really important to grasp about "pop star creation" is that it's more about social engineering. advertising (as a mode of marketing) will tend to fall flat if the audience recognizes it as advertising. if you can twist "internet marketing" into "millions of coordinated moments of individual self-discovery" then there's something to work with. otherwise, it will seem contrived, and no self-respecting rebellious teenager will stand for being spoon-fed their next idol.

so, this begs the question... what are you doing with your conception of a label?

Roj,
You've done a good job putting a theoretical framework around my conception of a label in the age of Digital Media. I'm wondering how you view new marketing strategies within this structure? For instance, the rise of email/internet advertising processes will enable greater scale of targeted marketing. Doesn't this make the Pop Star creation process easier?
Just a thought.

no rush.. when i sat down to do this one, i expected to spend a half hour or so, and it obviously got a lot more involved. i'm sure you'll have some interesting comments in time, and there are big flaws (i know of a couple already, there are certainly more), but i'm going to let this go as a first draft and see what develops. (and i want to see if a certain word i avoided shows up in the discussion :) )

You've given me too much to think about to post intelligently;

I'm going to have to digest this for a while before responding.
