I was reading a bunch of the comments on this page and I don’t think people realize what makes these counties the richest in America. They are done by Per Cappa income so it doesn't matter how big the homes are in your specific county what matters is the total amount of income being brought into each residence. Someone from Bergen County got very upset because their county wasn't on this list. I’ve been there and yes it does have some big homes but then again so does every other county. Bergen county can't be considered one of the richest however, because it is more common for there to only be one person per house hold working so the per cappa income isn't as big as in other counties where more than one person per household are bringing in the cash. There’s no reason to get mad about this it doesn't make a person special because they live in a rich area.

These areas where the wealthiest people reside are only that way, because that is what people are willing to pay. It will not last forever. Soon people are going to get tired of seeing a mere shack for sale in these areas for a million dollars and skip the area all together. Then if people really want or need to sell the prices will fall, especially now!

I live in Westchester County. And I must say, Westchester is very rich, especially in the the northern part with places such as Bedford, where I live. It has some bad parts in the south such as Mt. Vernon but still Westchester is Very rich. What's even richer though, is Fairfield County, I agree with you Mike. Fairfield is right next to Westchester and I go to places such as Greenwich and New Canaan a lot, and they are no doubt the richest places I've ever seen. EVERY house there is extremely expensive, and the houses are all extremely big and nice. Fairfield should be number 1, IT IS SO FRICKEN RICH! Westchester should definately be on there too.

Who really cares what the richest county is?? I mean is it ego? I personally find it sad that there are so many people in this country living below poverty and all these people who WASTE millions upon millions could care less! I know they earned it and all, but there is no need for greed and selfishness. NO, I am not a communist! I do find it sickening that there are people working their butts off who can't afford groceries and medical care nor can they get food stamps or medicaid. Maybe you live in the richest county, maybe not. Who cares how expensive your house is, how many cars you drive, how many luxury vacations you take a year? If you are not giving to society in some way, or helping people you are nothing. PERIOD!

and NYC is far from the richest city in America. It isn't even on the top 20 list. Like you have to remember though nyc has some of the richest areas and probably some of the highest incomes that it also has alot of the poorest areas that bring it down. Citys like San Jose have little poor areas and though there aren't many insanely expensive apartments n such there aren't the poor areas bringing down the average income.

by the way I just read something saying the average income in new jersey is 65,000 a year. I'd like to know how not more counties in new jersey could be on these lists when the highest average county income is like 50,000 a year. that makes no sense. completely insane. But yes New Jersey is the richest state in the country. Though New York state is named the same most new york city suburbs are in new jersey, and we also have all the suburbs of Philly. It is the richest state in the country, though many people refer to it as the armpit of the U.S.

i live in saddle river, yea it's rich as hell it's hard to believe bergen county's average income would be less than $40,000. Like the towns here are crazy, it's pretty impossible to find a house under 1.5 million in USR or saddle river, but you have to realize that counties around new york city like nassau or bergen county are metropolitan areas that are heavy populated and also have alot of apartments and city areas. Alot of these other counties are rural areas that have barely any people so it's easy for them to have all suburban like towns without poor areas. Where as if you looked at the richest towns list New York and New Jersey would probably have more than 70% of the top spots.

New York, Ny is the richest county in the country. For everyone who does not know, New York county is Manhattan.People who are not form new york may be confused, they hear about all the poor areas of new york. Harlem, The Bronx, Parts of queens and Brooklyn. New York county is only Manhattan. However Harlem is included. It is such a small area it doesn't make a dent in the average home price. Manhattan is the most desired county to live in. If you can afford to live in manhattan you only have a 10 minute commute to work. If you cannot live there than you have a very long train ride or you have to sit in massive traffic jams. This brings me to my point. Supply and demand. If a product is in demand the price for it will increase. People want to live in manhattan so the price to own property is high. Most of the cheaper homes in manhattan are 650-900 square feet. They sell for a million dollars. Yes one million dollars. For a home thats smaller than a two car garage. And don't forget your in the middle of new york city. YOUR MILLION DOLLARS BOUGHT YOU NO PROPERTY. No 5 acre estate. No gardens, pools or waterfront property. You go to the upper east and west sides and thats where the big money is. Brownstone townhouses which sell for 40-90 million dollars. Again little if any backyard. You put a n 800 square foot home with no land around it in any other county or town mentioned in this blog and I promise you it will be valued a half what it would be in Manhattan.
