it is the holiday season, for most people, at least, and with that spirit of giving and sharing going around (and the spirit of capitalism in the shopping centers), i thought i’d direct your attention to the venture philanthropy partners wishlists.
vpp is run by good people (i can’t say i know mario morino all that well, but we’ve run into each other a couple times), and these are all ways to make a difference, on a personal-scale.
so, if you’ve got some money to go shopping, or if you already have something on this list and don’t need it anymore… consider putting it to work….

the wall street journal says the faa will be hiring some 12, 000 air traffic controllers, 1000 per year, starting in 2006.
i didn’t dig deep enough to find out what the job qualifications are… but i imagine your video game experience is a good start.

ow that the system is live, despite concerns over the approach, that we’re still making progress toward a missile defense for north america…
The first test in nearly two years of a multibillion-dollar U.S. anti-missile shield failed on Wednesday when the interceptor missile shut down as it prepared to launch in the central Pacific, the Pentagon said.
About 16 minutes earlier, a target missile carrying a mock warhead had been successfully fired from Kodiak Island, Alaska, according to a statement from the Missile Defense Agency.
The aborted $85 million test appeared likely to set back plans for activation of a rudimentary bulwark against long-range ballistic missiles that could be fired by countries like North Korea.
no word on the operating system used for the interceptor missile. shutdown, restart or log off?

a news release from the university of pittsburgh medical college suggests that methylisothiazolinone interferes with neuron development in rats.
methylisothiazolinone is “an antimicrobial agent found in many shampoos and hand lotions and widely used in industrial settings.” so, before you go shampooing your smart rats, read the label on the shampoo.
personally, i think the whole anti-bacterial anti-microbial thing is a bad idea.

i couldn’t help but put these two things together when they crossed my attention within 24 hours of each other….
from the right, we have the creation museum in kentucky, near cincinnati…
… and from the left, we have the history of contraception museum at case western reserve in cleveland.
i propose a merger. the contra-creation museum. and of course, it should be in columbus.
