{"id":1892,"date":"2005-04-22T10:15:44","date_gmt":"2005-04-22T15:15:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rojisan.com\/blog\/2005\/04\/revenue-models-for-music-videos\/"},"modified":"2005-04-22T10:15:44","modified_gmt":"2005-04-22T15:15:44","slug":"revenue-models-for-music-videos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rojisan.com\/blog\/2005\/04\/revenue-models-for-music-videos\/","title":{"rendered":"revenue models for music videos"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>back at the end of january\/beginning of february,  i stumbled into two pieces on how the music business was flopping around trying to find some new models to survive on.  this was about music video distribution.<\/p>\n<p>i don&#8217;t want to get too far into the history of the music video, but i will say that generally speaking, the music video has been viewed as an advertisement for the album, much like the tour was to &#8220;support the album.&#8221;  <a href=\"https:\/\/rojisan.com\/blog\/2003\/12\/when_the_album_was_king.html\">the album<\/a>, of course, being the unit that matters for the record company, since their revenue structure is, historically at least, built on album sales.  the current trouble probably has <a href=\"https:\/\/rojisan.com\/blog\/2003\/12\/the_death_of_the_album.html\n\">something<\/a> to do with the <a href=\"https:\/\/rojisan.com\/blog\/2003\/12\/another_view_of_the_death_of_the_album.html\">death<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/rojisan.com\/blog\/2003\/12\/npr_looks_at_the_death_of_the_album.html\">album<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>in any case, it&#8217;s obvious that the record companies need to find new revenue models, and they&#8217;re willing to try anything.<\/p>\n<p>universal and warner have realized that the music video is a product unto itself, and as such can be sold (or, rather, monetized):<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div class=\"sourcequote\"><a href=\"http:\/\/pqasb.pqarchiver.com\/nypost\/787270291.html?did=787270291&amp;FMT=ABS&amp;FMTS=FT&amp;date=Feb+1%2C+2005&amp;author=TIM+ARANGO&amp;desc=UNIVERSAL+MUSIC+CHARGING+VIDEO+NETS+TO+AIR+ARTISTS\" class=\"broken_link\">Universal Music Charging Video Nets to Air Artists<\/a> [ny post, february 1, 2005 &#8211; now locked up behind a pay-per-view model itself, and certainly not worth $3.95]<\/div>\n<p>Universal&#8217;s new policy is believed to be the first in which a record company has decided to charge per video for every service that exists.<\/p>\n<p>MSN is the first to sign on under Universal&#8217;s new policy.
