sorry i’m late to the party on this one… seems a guy that used what was available in the middle of a disaster to do something useful (like saving people’s lives) will now have to waste his time and my legal system because the owner of the boat he used to rescue said people has suffered terribly as a result.
“Next time there’s a major storm or natural disaster and I’m called to save lives, I’ll try to remember to bring a pen and paper,” he said.

i was curious, so a quick update on 911 iraq parity day.
9/11 casualties: 2976
iraq casualties: 2642
just 334 to go! with an average run rate of 2.04 ( 491 / 243 ) american deaths/day so far in 2006, that puts 911 iraq parity day just 163 days from now, which is…. 2/12/2007. did you place your bets yet?
someone’s still counting dead iraqis too… 41041, or approaching 14 dead iraqis for each dead american on 9/11. not that there’s any connection…
for yet another perspective on body counts, let’s look at percentages: 41041 / 26,783,383 = .153% of their population. .153% of our population (298,444,215) is 456.619 dead americans. that is pretty close to the annual death toll from tobacco in america (442,398 according to the CDC), or the entire population of the des moines, iowa or chattanooga, tennessee metro area (take your pick).

of course, this is nearly five years old, so if you were a terrorist, you probably wouldn’t be reading this…
A little-known federal program created days after Sept. 11, 2001, examined financial aid records of college students targeted by the FBI in terrorism investigations, but it’s unclear whether it netted any terrorists, according to U.S. Education Department documents.

recently, i asked for 5 minutes for each of the children killed, because the news media can’t get their priorities straight.
one step in the right direction, courtsey wcpo.

i found the 24/7 news coverage of the 10-year-old dead 6-year-old news story completely unavoidable, despite the fact that it wasn’t news. so, now i’ll just wait for my personal apology from all the major news organizations that did wall-to-wall coverage of the story that wasn’t.
failing a personal apology, 5 minutes for every other child killed in america in the past 10 years will do.

it appears that in some places in america, people can’t handle flags.
best wishes, eric hamlin. even middle school students need to know we live on a planet full of countries.
