upgrade in progress
i’m sure i’m breaking lots of stuff. pardon the dust.
This site is currently broken
i’ve been away from the blogging for a while, but i wanted to share a few things that have evolved recently here at meta-roj….
first, and most notable, is the walmart application situation. i’ve discussed this evolving story here before, but now that we’re even getting attention in french, i figured it was worth mentioning again. i’m still not sure exactly how i want to proceed with this one… maybe a book deal… maybe i’ll contact a few applicants and do some phone interviews. i dunno. it’s just… well… sad, i guess is the best description.
and while we’re on the subject of sad…. there’s more, and it’s here. you see, once upon a time, i wrote a little post here about the richest counties in america. this was (as you might notice from the comments and addendum to the post) based on based on “average adjusted household gross income” as reported by the irs. where things get sad is that over 11,000 hits have come to that post so far this year. and once they’re there, some of my visitors are compelled to get into a pissing match with each other about who’s got the richest neighbors and the best cars. anyway, since there are now more than 60 comments attached to that post, and since most of them are really pitiful attempts at superiority, i figured it was worth mentioning.
and finally, we have the dead american soldiers. here, things actually started relatively reasonably… a few well-wishers dropped in to share their thoughts, and then things got weird. 20+ comments later, we’re looking for penpals (and, in some cases, it sounds like dates).
to put these posts in context, i will add that the richest-counties post accounts for just under 3.5% of traffic from this site. the walmart post, being a bit larger with the number of comments now attached, consumes just over 4% of traffic. the dead soliders is still less than 1000 direct hits, and just a tiny fraction of a percent of traffic, but it’s got legs. i see greatness in its future.
anyway, these three examples of sadness at the meta-roj blog brought to you by determinism.
have a nice day, and may your reading comprehension exceed the average.

just wanted to pick on myself a bit for posting nothing but dead people for pretty much the whole front page. sorry ’bout that – i wish i could share a bit more, so if anyone’s got some slave labor available….
in a follow-up to the internet brings the stupid, i’m happy to announce that as of this moment, this post is now the #1 hit on google for walmart job application and walmart online application.
thank you, stupid people of the internet. i couldn’t have done it without you.
one of those strange googlejuice moments…. i figured it was a quirk of some sort, and that it would eventually fade away, but perhaps not.
at the moment, if you ask google’s image search what is “sexy,” then down in the bottom row (hit #19) is a picture of a typhoon and a link to this blog.
it’s this post, which was a reference to this earlier post, both of which were about really big, dramatic storms. oddly enough, the google image search spider seems to have avoided updating the page in quite some time. i reorganized the archives a bit back in january, and these two storm posts moved from the science category to a new weather category. for the benefit of the hundreds of visitors i’m getting from google, i’ve done some tweaks so these inbounds end up at least in the right category. hopefully google will catch up soon (it’s been a couple months…). i imagine when it does, this freaky sexy phenomenon will fade out… but then again, the force is strong with this domain.
update (2005.03.16): curiosity about this drove me to investigate. we’ve had 7431 visitors from various google image search engines around the world looking for this image between january 16 and march 13, 2005. that’s a lot of sexy.

and worse, once the stupid manifests itself, it spreads like a cancer.
just in case you had any doubts, i direct your attention to the comments attached to this post about walmart getting into the online music business.
since i haven’t been blogging much of late (life intrudes and all that…), with the exception of the memorial pages, i thought i should take the few extra moments necessary to make them more useful. memorial pages will include links to wikipedia where articles are available.
pretty quiet around here, but some news under the hood….
i’ve recent upgraded the engine under this beast, now “mt-pi.” in the process, of course, things broke. it took some time to track down a conflict with templates that seemed to be a problem with directories and configurations, but that’s sorted out now. left on the table so far is a problem with the stylesheet. right now things look functional, but broken. i’ll get into that someday.
i’m also in the process of cleaning out old, irrelevant drafts i’ve left “to blog” that no longer make sense to keep around (lots of presidential politics stuff that’s well… pointless). i’ll also be re-categorizing things a bit to make the archives more tolerable.
hot topics coming up for 2005 will definitely incldue a revival of the music business material – i’ve got some good friends and genuinely good people that are dangerously close to the beast right now, so their adventures will be near the top of my attention pile, and, as a result, somewhere near the blog.
i’ll also take some time someday soon to do a wrapup of what happened in 2004 with regard to my dark corner of the net. 2004 marked a pretty steep drop off in content here – a major shift from big, in-depth, personally-focused pieces (like that big three part adventure on the future of the cd and the music business toward one-liners and a whole pile of obituaries. thanks to the obits, the raw number of posts here has been pretty consistent, but the substance is lacking. there are many reasons for all this – economic, personal and artistic – but it is what it is.
so, back under the hood for me, and hopefully i’ll see you again soon.
